Athlete Grants
Enda is a social enterprise that is building the world’s best running shoes and driving development in Kenya. Pursuant to this mission, and through the Enda Foundation, we aim to support athletes development initiatives based in Kenya. The foundation is pleased to announce the athletes grant, and its inaugural one will cater to runners in Kenya.
The grant is specifically designed to support runners who have been impacted financially causing their inability to maintain a basic standard of living. The fund will be available to runners who are competing at local and international level, experiencing reduced income that has impacted their ability to maintain a basic standard of living or competing.
The core activities covered by the grant will include:
- basic needs: including rent, food, and utilities
- medical expenses: physiotherapy/rehabilitation, pregnancy
- training and development: coaches, training kits/sports equipment, training camp
- competition expenses: travel and competition expenses.
Considering the ongoing global pandemic, we are dedicated to providing assistance to our runners, to enable them to continue to train and develop their skill.
All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- All athletes must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have never had an anti-doping rule violation.
- Must demonstrate significant loss in earnings that impact their ability to maintain their standard of living.
- Applications must be endorsed or supported on the application form by the club or organization where the individual is a full time member.
- Athletes should not have received any grant from the Government, National Olympic Committee, Member Federation and/or have locked in sponsorship for 2020.
- Should not be retired.
- Athletes that have not been charged with fraud, corruption or any related offenses - sexual harassment, abuse of office.

About the grant
Enda Foundation is launching a welfare grant to support athletes going through challenging financial times. The Fund will support athletes who are competitive at local and international level facing reduced income negatively impacting their ability to maintain their basic standard of living. This could be as a result of injury, pregnancy, withdrawn sponsorship, lack of funding to attend camps or pay agents or buy kits. Athletes need to meet a minimum performance standard in their field to apply for the grant.
Eligibility
An eligibility criteria has been developed to ensure that grants from the fund are delivered to the athlete most in need. All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Must have never had an anti-doping rule violation.
- Must demonstrate significant loss in earnings that impact their ability to maintain their standard of living.
- Applications must be endorsed or supported on the application form by the club or organization where the individual is a full time member.
- All athletes must be at least 18 years old.
- Athletes who have not received any grant from the Government, National Olympic Committee, Member Federation and/or have locked in sponsorship for 2020.
- Athletes cannot have a footwear or apparel sponsorship, including from Enda .
- Athletes should not be retired.
- Athletes that have not been charged with fraud, corruption or any related offenses - sexual harassment, abuse of office.

Application timeline:
- Sept 23, 2020: Grant Application opens
- Oct 31, 2020: Grant Application closes
- Nov 1 - 30, 2020: Review of application and shortlisting of awardees by Enda Foundation
- December 1, 2020: Grant Award Notifications are sent & distribution period
Required documentation
- Completed Grant Request Form
- If applying for a grant on the basis of a physical disability or sports injury, supporting medical proof will be required
- High quality photocopy of your ID Card
- Reference letter (from a family member, friend, coach, teammate, etc.) who knows you really well and can provide more information on why you should be considered for this grant (maximum one page long).
Fund use restrictions
Depending on the funding category you are applying for, the following costs are eligible for funding:
- Basic needs application
Funding should be used to cover basic needs that include rent, food, and utilities (water, electricity). - Medical expenses
Injury - Grants received should be used to cover medical bills or physiotherapy/rehabilitation.
Pregnancy - Hospital bills for mum & child, food, clothes for the child and anything else needed for the newborn. - Training fund
Covers the cost coaches, training kits/sporting equipment, training camp. - Competition expenses
Covers costs related to sports competition including travel, room & board.
Monitoring and Review
- Grant recipients will be expected to complete monitoring forms to show how the funding has affected their progress; this will include good news stories, photographs, press coverage, and case studies.
- Grant recipients will be expected to agree that this information can be used by Enda Foundation for promotional purposes.
